As I lay moping around in bed, nursing what felt like the world's most dramatic face pain, I decided to distract myself with a book.
Enter Summer at the Lake by Erica James
If I had to describe Summer at the Lake by Erica James in one word, it would be "pleasant." If I could sneak in a few more, I'd say, "pleasant, with a side of scenic escapism and a sprinkle of drama."
This isn’t a genre I’d usually reach for. Rromance doesn’t exactly make my heart flutter, but despite my hesitations, I found myself pleasantly surprised. It’s the literary equivalent of that friend who insists you try a dish you’re skeptical about, and when you do, you’re like, “Okay, maybe I don’t hate it.”
The story follows three very different people. Esme, the wise and sassy octogenarian; Floriana, navigating life’s curveballs in her twenties; and Adam, a guy who probably has “success” on his LinkedIn profile but might need a masterclass in life priorities. Through a twist of fate (accident), their lives collide, and what ensues is a delightful, heartwarming friendship. Think of it as the grown-up version of the best group project you’ve ever been part of.
One standout is Esme’s backstory, a journey through her bittersweet past at Lake Como, Italy, that tugs at the heartstrings. When the trio decides to venture to Lake Como themselves, the setting practically steals the show. I mean, if I had Esme’s story and access to those breathtaking views, I’d probably write my memoirs there too. What follows is a series of dramatic events that keep you invested, even if romance isn’t your vibe.
Erica James writes with an easy elegance that draws you in and gives the characters life. That said, the romance didn’t quite win me over.
It’s not you, Summer at the Lake, it’s me—I’m just not that into candlelit dinners and soul-stirring declarations.
